G-Dragon: From K-Pop King to Cultural Pioneer
지드래곤: K-POP의 왕에서 문화·기술 혁신의 아이콘으로

G-Dragon — born Kwon Ji-yong — has long been hailed as one of the most influential figures in K-pop history.
From his rise as the leader of BIGBANG to his evolution as a solo artist, producer, and cultural icon, he continues to redefine what it means to be a global artist. In 2025 alone, G-Dragon has made waves not just in music but in academia, technology, and culture — proving that his influence reaches far beyond the stage.
The Return of the King: Music and Awards
After a long hiatus, G-Dragon returned with his third full-length album Übermensch in 2025. The album blended hip-hop, electronic pop, and avant-garde textures, and spawned successful singles like “Power” and “Too Bad.” Übermensch not only solidified his artistic evolution but was accompanied by a major world tour, Übermensch World Tour, marking his first global tour since 2017.
At the 2025 MAMA Awards, G-Dragon was a standout winner, securing multiple major awards, including Best Male Artist, after nearly a decade since his last full-solo comeback. These wins reaffirm his enduring impact on the global music scene.

Academic Recognition: G-Dragon as Visiting Professor at KAIST
In June 2024, G-Dragon was appointed as a visiting professor at the prestigious Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering — a remarkable milestone for a K-pop artist. His term runs through June 2026.
In this role, he delivers leadership lectures to undergraduate and graduate students, sharing insights from his decades-long career in creativity, artistry, and cultural leadership. More importantly, G-Dragon’s appointment represents a cutting-edge fusion of entertainment and technology — known as entertech. KAIST and G-Dragon’s collaborators are jointly researching next-generation tech including AI, metaverse applications, digital twin technology, and artist avatars.
This initiative goes beyond classroom lectures: a new research center within the Mechanical Engineering Department aims to bring scientific innovation together with K-culture content creation — a first of its kind in Korean academia.
G-Dragon’s vision for this partnership extends to developing AI avatars that can connect with fans globally and exploring how entertainment and technology can drive cultural impact in new ways.

A First in the U.S.: USC Course Dedicated to G-Dragon
In 2025, the University of Southern California (USC) announced an unprecedented four-credit academic course centered entirely on G-Dragon — titled “COMM 400: Crooked Studies of K-pop: The Case of G-Dragon.” This marks the first time a U.S. university has offered a for-credit class dedicated to a K-pop artist, placing G-Dragon alongside global cultural figures previously studied in academia such as Beyoncé (Yale) and Taylor Swift (Harvard).
The course will examine his musical career, cultural influence, and creative legacy, further solidifying his role as a subject of serious academic study.
What This Means for K-Culture
G-Dragon’s expanding footprint — from music awards and world tours to university syllabi and science-tech partnerships — signals a new era where entertainment intersects meaningfully with scholarship, innovation, and global culture.
He is not only a K-pop king but also a bridge between creative industries and cutting-edge research, inspiring students, artists, and technologists worldwide.
